Informatization, first coined in Japan in the late 1960s as johoka, is now used with at least the following three meanings: (1) intentional policies or strategies using information technologies to promote socioeconomic development; (2) the penetration of modern information and communication technologies into government, industry, and the home, in the broadest sense; and (3) the development of communication technologies, the increase of information flows, and the diffusion of mass media and education among the general public.
