Different Definitions of “Professional Employee”
The word “Ethics” comes from the Greek language called “Ethos” which means moral character or habits, which usually include things such as norms and manners. In this era, Ethics will always be everywhere and must be used in any situation, including in workplaces. Therefore, a term called “Work ethics” emerged. Work ethics are normative values that contain moral systems and principles to serve as guidelines for employees in doing their jobs. Work ethics are made for employees so that they can be disciplined and able to improve company performance by following the work ethics that apply in the company. Work ethic is very important in the world of work because this thing is the key to becoming a professional employee. However, every company has different work ethic procedures. Several companies create their work ethic procedures to achieve the goals of the company. Therefore, this diversity ultimately creates different definitions of “Professional employees” in every company in this world.
I have interviewed two people from two companies with different fields to find out the “Work ethics” procedures applied in each company. The first person that I interview is one of the employees at PT Pertamina who works in the gas and oil sector, while the second person is one of the employees at “Tunas Cahaya Bangsa” foundation that works in the field of education. Based on my interviews, I discovered the fact that these two companies have different “Work Ethic” procedures. The work ethic that is instilled in the “Tunas Cahaya Bangsa” foundation is teamwork, submission, integrity, and a sense of belonging. Meanwhile, the work ethic instilled in PT Pertamina is called “6C”, the contents of the six c’s are clean (avoiding conflicts of interest, not tolerating any bribed, upholding trust and integrity; and be guided by the principles of good corporate governance), competitive (able to compete at the regional and international levels), confident (to play the role in the national economic development), customer-focused (be customer-oriented and be committed to providing the best service to the customers), Commercial (to create value-added with commercial and to make decisions based on healthy business principles), and capable (is managed by professional leaders and employees having the talent and high technical skills, committed to developing research and capabilities).
The communication skills required for these two companies are quite different. At PT Pertamina, they need more people with communication skills that lead to technical communication because it refers to the oil and gas background, they need to understand the communication between the reservoir engineer drillers and geologists. Meanwhile, at the Tunas Cahaya Bangsa Foundation, they applied more communication skills such as being good speakers, responsive listeners, and active questioners. This difference also creates different problems, Pertamina companies get more problems in technical issues, while the Tunas Cahaya Bangsa Foundation often gets problems that lead to communication between employees. However, the way each employee resolves the problem must be adjusted to the “work ethics” procedures applied in each company.
In my opinion, every company can define its own “professional employee”. Some companies define “professional employees” by being able to work technically and there are companies that define “professional employees” as the workers who can communicate well. When we are already working in a company, we must be able to adapt to the “work ethics” procedures that apply in that company so that we can achieve the standard of professionalism desired by the company. So, prepare yourself for entering the professional world and live up to their standards.
